Democracy in India

The government of India has once again blown the bugle of reservation. This time its the IITs and the IIMs which will benefit from this genuine move for the upliftment of the backward classes. What a wonderful gesture it is on the part of the government! However, some wise and educated people like N R Narayanamurthy,Rahul Bajaj, alumnii from the IITs and IIMs think otherwise. Why don't these "businessmen" understand that such steps have to be taken by the government in the interests of the people in particular and the nation in general. After all successive governments in India have always ensured that the common man's needs are always addressed.Keeping in mind the policy of reservation over the last 50 years the government has just decided to extend it to the higher educational institutions like the IITs and IIMs.After all democracy is basically a rule of the people,by the people and for the people. How can the government refuse to pay heed to the needs of middle class India? After all reservations in the IITs and IIMs is the only way to ensure social equality. The primary or basic needs of the backward class people today is reservations in the private sectors and elite institutions.Secondary issues like health, food, primary education, child marriage, female infantcide etc can always wait.Once the reservation bill is passed all the other secondary issues will be solved automatically. It will all fall into place at the appropriate time. This is the first step towards a vison of a united and powerful India. After all democracy is all about peoples rule.According to government logic even people from the backward catses will agree that they are eagerly waiting for admissions in the elite institutions for years, since they have already got used to living in social inequality, without proper food, access to water, spiralling death rates etc.Now they no longer care about primary education, food, health as they have got used to life without all of this.
People from all castes and communities have a right to live in equality and unity.Everyone should live a life with dignity and honour.Reservations are the appropriate step in that direction. The basic functions that a government has to carry out are ensuring admissions for everyone from the backward caste to the general category people in the various governmental and and educational isntitutions.Law and order, rising unepmloyment, widening divide between the rich and the poor, spiralling population and other such needs can always wait. The government first has to ensure that it unites the people from various castes and communities for the progress of India.Vision 2020 can never be achieved without ensuring reservation in all the sectors. After all the common man, wheter form the general category of the backward category has always wanted this. The government cannot refuse the demands of modern India.Hail democracy.

I hope you are being sarcastic, because reservation is not good for anyone.

As a matter of fact, I think if reservation is continued Vision 2020 is impossible.

Think about it. BC's are entering medical schools, engineering colleges with 50% and Bhramins need 95% for the same colleges.

Now you tell me, would you want a BC doctor treating you (who really would not even have got into the college if he/she wasn't BC)? Is the doctor who got into school with 50% really competent? Would you feel safe crossing bridges built by 50% civil engineers or live in a building built again by 50% engineers? Do they really know what they are doing? No wonder India's infrastructure is poor!

India needs to drop all reservation if it hopes to elevate itself. 100% seats should be free and open to ALL regardless of religion, caste and ethnicity. Government could perhaps reserve 5% seats for the physically disabled, but otherwise all seats should be free and open.

Right now our system is working on a tit-for-tat basis. Bhramins treated non-Bhramins unfairly in the past, so now the Bhramin kids are paying the price. Tit-for-tat is not the answer in this case and will only lead to India's self-demise in the end.

I think the entire reservation system is built on INequality rather than equality and is purely motivated by the wrong reasons (i.e. political)! By increasing reservation, the politicians are only interested in the BC vote bank and not really their upliftment.

Do you agree?

A stinging post this.

One point though, it is true that there are large parts of the country are today disenchanted with the system as it exists today coz they feel they have not been made stakeholders in it.
The rise of Maoists/Naxalites/unrest in Northeast can simply not be uncorrelated.
While the arguement that providing them food/water/basic amenities is true to an extent, our experience with socialism so far has shown this approach to be ineffective. The answer today is not as easy as we may like it to be.

I'd suggest one possible solution
We need to identify core groups in need of help - AND THIS SHOULD NOT BE ON BASIS OF CASTE?RELIGION/REGION. Let us form a "Living Index" where in we could sort our citizens into levels 1,2,3...etc.
wherein level 1 could mean this category of citizens have no access to primary facilities like food/drinking water/sanitation etc. Level 2 has basic amenities but no primary education and so on.
Let us have a census every 5 years and let the number of conversions from level 1 to 2, 2 to 3, etc. be the parameter on which we judge our governments.

Ofcourse maintaing such records will be expensive. But considering that we are home to some of the most successful IT companies, developing cost effective solutions should not be impossible.
Besides, this be could be done in public-private partnership.

Hey Pranav, I like what I see here. Keep up the good work. Its quite amazing how blogs open up an entirely new dimension of one's personality to the outside world.

Hey Neeraj thanks a lot.I sometimes find it really surprising that people find my posts a bit interesting. Its flattering to say the least. Thanks a lot.As for ur suggestion,I think we all know what is wrong with the system.Even the politicians know what is wrong. But,the problem is that we still have no courageous leader who will put a stop to this reservation business.India will be counted as a developed nation only when we remove all these differences drawn on the lines of caste, religion etc.As for the reservation policy,I think instead of removing it completely,we must gradually bring the percentages down so that it won't hit the underprivileged sections really hard. Its high time we did something cocncrete for the backward castes and the underprivileged.Reservations though aren't the proper way out.

Mr. anonymous,
whatever I wrote was obviously written in a sarcastic tone.I wouldn't mind being treated by a BC doctor if he is qualified.Let me remind you that Brahmins are not the only ones who have been hit by the reservation policy. There are other non Brahmins/non BC's who too suffer due to the reservation policy.

Yeah, I should have read what you wrote more closely. Sorry about that!

Anyway, that wouldn't change my comment much.

I wouldn't mind being treated by a SC doctor either as long as they are qualified. Qualified is the key word here.

But, at least today, it is a safe bet that if a doctor is BC, then he/she is PROBABLY NOT qualified! Hope that's not the case in the future but most likely it will only get worse...

hey patty...
two things i noticed... as i am asigned to notice the texture of ur posts...
1. the matter is good.. but the facts are sometimes botched.... like when u say"People from all castes and communities have a right to live in equality and unity"... u need more punch and effect to it... samja
2. the sarcasm is well appreciated... but the approach to sarcasm has to be very punctuated and the facts that u hv need to be pplaced in a very decorative way.. like a game of flash.....

hey i forgot to write my opinion on this topic..
here i go....

first of alll the choice of ur title totally wrong.... remember that democracy has nothing to do with reservations....
india has a history of casteism.. loog before democracy was even a buuzzword in this world.....

next..reservation to an extent was neccessary in the just independent india.... too many ppl were being deprived of chances to study further due to their caste... B.R ambedkar took care of that.....

but strangely enuf.....hasnt this argument been soo centric towards the individual sc or obc??? why talk only of doctors?? cause they hv a very grave job at hand..... y not talk abt the resrvation that women get.. and the resrvation that is prevelant in other streams as wel.. y not talk abt arts or as a matter of fact commerce?? dont u think u wud screw the case of the CA who botches up ur finance..... be it a sc or bc or any tom dick harry for that matter......
and even engg .. wudn the company put the guy on a bed of thorns if he werent worthy enuf.. be it sc or bc or general category....

the government aint doin itself noo good by reserving the seats in all instituions...... cause any which way those reserved seats r gonna be sold......
soo it wud be a much better exercise if they employ this system in schools and ensuring that the reserved categor ppl atleast getaccess to basic educattion.. after that let them fend for themselves.......
and u were rite that this decision by arjun singh smells of his ineptitude..... his lack of poltical sense is a worrying factor....
and democracy has in it some inherently irreparable flaws like socialism and market capitalism... and like the scores other modes of government conducit have......
but currently in india atleast the need for a stable and smart and the wizardly political head is the need of the hour..
u knw it ....

why I deserve IEEE membership?

I love IEEE.... jeez!!I just love it.... within itself, it has 4 vowels and on top of that 3 are repeated...
I love the way the seminars are conducted. the ''never say die'' attitude of the IEEE members has to be appreciated;Even when most of the seminars are attended only by the staff(( they wud be fired if they dont!!)).
the marketing strategy adopted by them by offering various incentives to memebers who actually manage to sit thru them...((the seminars and workshops!!!)).. is commendable.. to say the least... just tht the lesser mortals care-a damn... isnt it?
the empty seminar halls sometimes make spectacular viewing..dont they?..with dim lights , full blast ac and a very knowledgeble crowd (very few!!), including the speaker of course; wht more i can occupy more than one seat.... they take care of every ones comfort... soooooo cute!!!
not to forget the events organised by them.. they never fail to fascinate the masses.. in fact most of them are still awwstruck!!
i never knew water-rockets were soo important for a college which has 3 branches other than mechanical or aeronautical science... on enquiring about its need... i began cursing myself for my lack of depth... they were meant to be popular topics with the masses i was told... i hv never been a popular trend follower i guess!!

with the able and expert guidance of prof L.K. Ragha; i am sure that everything including the forthcoming techfest shall pass off quite(ly) well without anyone's raised eyebrow.

The future chairperson shuld have excellent oratory skills as did their predecessors and have the most important skill to enter IEEE 'Playing the Guitar''
Knowing my limitations and inabilty to learn the esteemed instrument, i wud like to clarify that i hv always aimed to be an engineer and not Bruce Springsteen...stupid aims u see...

Also noteworthy of attention is the organised planning which goes into the forthcoming tech-fest's, for which reprographic facilities like 10 walkie-taikies, 3 lcd's and 8 speaker's shall be of great use in ..ahem.. crowd pulling!!

Again i wud like to profess my loove for all thing tht are related to IEEE.." i love IEE" and soon i shall get a permentant marker made of ink on my hand stating"" IEEE is my birthright, and i shall have it!!""

ha.. that was a stupid fight b/w prick devil n his colleagues...
now lets get deep into the matter of reservations....
1. agreed dat brahmins had ill treated bc's in te past
2. agreed that its injustice for the general category in India 2day
3. agreed that this generation had 2 speak up 1 fine day against d govt
4. agreed dat 2020 vision will not b fulfilled till admission becomes open 2 all.........
but , but,ppl's....dat vision of 2020 itself included the upliftment of all d societies in India, which wud create a equal opportunities 2 all..i mean d word ALL..
maxm middle class ppl r frm bc, have u guys ever been into their houses wad they eat, drink, their lifestyle, their spending...the list is endless...i know its got nothing 2 do with reservation....but how long will they live in the same damn place with adjustments n suffering..4get 2020 vision...dont these middle class parents have a better vision 4 their kids. they do..
dont they feel like having a secure future 4 their grand childrens ..they do..
u tell me how is going 2 b possible with 7-10 grands income/mnth and adjust it in college fees of 50-60grands/mnth..
u talk abt med students...more than half of them r born rich 2 spend in 5-7 lakhs just as a donation ..n trust me this doesnt include the seats left out of resaervations but purely college offered seats...so where does reservation comes in to place..

its only when u dont have enough money in ur jack ass 2 spend in n make ur child a engg or med grad..
it was never a problm for b.sc, b.com students...as they themselves fall in that category with less marks....n if they have money they purchase d seat or they arent interested at all..
4 students who miss out d seats by 1 or 2 mrks in a mumbai college they unknowingly start blamin d bc's kids...as its just d anger..n less amnt of hard work...
d matter of a 50 % chut treating u as a doctor or building a place 2 stay never comes in as he gets qualified with u at the same time man....he makes d same attempt in college as u do..d only diff is ppl neglect 2 sort out d diff one they get into d college n d chut left out start making these differences.........

dude,, wake up man...i agree d extensin of seats is a wrong step taken...but that doesnt mean complete eradication of resevation.i know this note of mine wont convince u...it might blow up sum1's jack ass as well....but trust me do reply n we shall find a proper answer 2 it which even d indian govt is unable 2 answer........

Even if the majority are from the BC, can u please explain how "reservation" would help them solve them problem u are citing?
And please refrain from abusing, on blog space. Do it in person.
And one more thing, does a bc guy deserve a seat if he gets 50%? Dont think so, because no matter how poor he is, he hasnt studied. Period.

How does reservation bring about upliftment of the backward classes? We are speaking about people who don't get food to eat,a place to dwell, proper clothing etc.Do u think these people will be ready to go to the IIM's,IIT's and other professional institutions. The reservations are being used by people who are economically at a comparable level to all of us(from the general category),but just have that tag of backward class associated with them. These people can very well afford to pay the fees and attend decent schools and colleges. If at all quotas are needed then they should be meant only for the economically backward classes and not people from the "backward class".Please read my blog and earlier coments carefully.I never said that quoats should be removed immediately.I just mentioned that we should gradually start doing away wit the system of reservation over a period of say 25-30 years. The reservations should be brought down gradually, not overnight.I would advise u to read the posts and comments carefully before starting a debate. Why don't u reveal your name.I guess it would be fun to have a discussion with a known face rather than an unknown stranger.I guess u have no idea about my vocabulary(Hindi and English),otherwise u would have abstained fro using the kind of language which u have used
